A project helping young people recognise the tobacco industry’s targeted and manipulative strategies and supporting their involvement in tobacco control.
- Project development
- Youth-focused visibility and implementation support
The need
Young people’s exposure to the marketing and manipulation tactics that the tobacco industry aims at them, without recognising those tactics, and the lack of a platform through which they could take part in tobacco control advocacy, were the starting point for this initiative. The lack of a participatory approach allowing young people to have a say on the issue in their own forms of expression made it difficult for awareness work to have a lasting impact. In response to this need, SGSMD, with support from the Ministry of Interior, launched the Youth Initiative Against the Tobacco Industry on three university campuses.
Force & Brothers’ approach
Force & Brothers supported the development of the project and its youth-focused visibility activities. Our team contributed to the design of the training, art and talk events held on three university campuses and helped young people bring content explaining the tobacco industry’s tactics to campus walls.
Outcome
By the end of the implementation, young people on three university campuses had gained the ability to recognise the tobacco industry’s marketing and manipulation tactics and to speak out on the issue. Through the messages brought to campus walls, tobacco control was carried into young people’s daily lives and their own forms of expression, creating lasting awareness.
