The need

The lack of reliable, country-level data on the prevalence of tobacco use and on public awareness of its health risks in Iraq, Egypt, Jordan and Palestine created a gap that made it difficult to design effective national communication campaigns. At a time when COVID-19 was reshaping public health priorities, there was a need for evidence-based awareness work suited to the differing social and cultural conditions in the four countries. In response to this need, GHD|EMPHNET and Vital Strategies launched the Together Against Tobacco and COVID Programme, which examined tobacco use and public health awareness and developed national campaigns based on the findings.

02

Force & Brothers’ approach

Force & Brothers carried out the research to map the prevalence of tobacco use in the four countries. Our team translated the findings into national communication campaigns tailored to each country’s own conditions, and managed these campaigns and their dissemination activities.

03

Outcome

By the end of the programme, a reliable dataset on tobacco use and public health awareness had been created in four Eastern Mediterranean countries, and this data was turned directly into country-specific national campaigns. As a result, public awareness of the health risks of tobacco use in Iraq, Egypt, Jordan and Palestine was raised through evidence-based, targeted communication. The campaigns implemented in each country were measured through comprehensive field analyses, and their contribution to public health was made tangible through evidence-based campaign management.
